    PTSD Treatment There are many types of treatment for PTSD. You and your healthcare provider (e.g. family doctor, psychologist, etc.) will discuss the best treatment for you. You may have to try a number of treatments before you find one that works for you. A type of counseling called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and medicines are known as SSRIs appear to be the most effective treatments for PTSD. Treatment can help you feel more in control of your emotions and result in fewer symptoms, but you may still have some bad memories.

Dr. Paulette Laidlaw, PhD., C.Psych Dr. Paulette Laidlaw 905-6 35-7770 drlaidlaw@drlpsych.c a Dr. Laidlaw is a Clinical, Counselling, and Rehabilitation Psychologist with extensive experience in providing psychological services. Her areas of specialization include critical incident stress, posttraumatic stress, and psychological difficulties of first responders. Dr. Laidlaw provides individual treatment to adults aged 19 years and older, utilizing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy, and Brief Psychotherapy. She also conducts pre-employment personnel selection assessments for emergency services and offers personality, intellectual, developmental, and vocational assessments. In addition, Dr. Laidlaw is a registered provider for several organizations, including the Salvation Army, Blue Cross, and Veterans Affairs Canada. She is a member of several professional associations, including the Ontario Psychological Association and the Canadian Psychological Association. Dr. Laidlaw holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts Degree in Human Development (combined Psychology, Kinesiology, and Sociology) from Laurentian University, Sudbury. She also has a certificate in Trauma Counselling for Front-Line Workers from the Hincks-Dellcrest Centre, Toronto. Dr. Laidlaw furthered her education by earning a Master of Education Degree in Counselling Psychology and a Philosophy Doctorate Degree in Counselling Psychology from the University of Toronto. She is a Registered Psychologist with the College of Psychologists of Ontario and has completed training in Group Crisis Intervention from the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation in Buffalo, NY.

    Susan joined Dr. Laidlaw & Associates in January 2018 as Administrative Assistant and Receptionist. Susan’s first career was as a High School Physical Education Teacher in Scotland after obtaining a Diploma of Education (Dip.Ed). Following a motor vehicle accident Susan had to explore alternate care Ornella Ornella 905-635-7770 administration@laidlawpsych.ca Ornella joined Dr. Laidlaw and Associates in January of 2022. Ornella is part of the administration team and is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day duties in the office. Ornella brings to the team over 30 years of small business ownership and has dealt with clients for many of those years. Her outgoing personality is an asset to our office.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology with a Minor in Criminology from Western University and is in the process of continuing her education through graduate studies in counselling psychology. In her role, Olivia supports the practice by conducting literature reviews, analyzing current research, and developing training material for peer support initiatives with first responders. She contributes to the team’s work by translating research into practical resources that enhance mental health awareness and resilience.

    Signs of PTSD PTSD symptoms are grouped into four clusters. You may not exhibit all the symptoms, but you do need to have some symptoms in all categories to be diagnosed with PTSD. Intrusive Memories Unwanted, repeated, and distressing memories of a traumatic event Repeated, disturbing dreams about the traumatic event Flashbacks; suddenly feeling as if you were re-experiencing the traumatic event. Feeling emotionally or physically distressed when something reminds you of a traumatic event Avoidance Avoiding feelings, thoughts, and memories of a traumatic event Avoiding places, people, activities, situations, and/or objects that remind you of a traumatic event Negative Changes in Thoughts and Moods Difficulty remembering significant parts of a traumatic event Strong negative beliefs about yourself or other people; negative changes to your worldview Blaming yourself or others for the traumatic event and its aftermath Experiencing negative emotions such as guilt, fear, horror, anger, and/or shame Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed Feeling detached from other people, including family, friends, and co-workers Difficulty experiencing positive emotions Arousal - Changes in Physical and Emotional Reactions Irritable behaviour, angry outbursts, and/or acting aggressively Risky or self-destructive behaviour such as driving too fast, drinking too much, not wearing safety equipment properly Hypervigilant; always watchful or on guard Easily startled or frightened; feeling jumpy Difficulty concentrating or focusing Difficulty falling and/or staying asleep

She supports all aspects of day-to-day office operations. She brings a wealth of administrative and interpersonal skills acquired over a decade-long career in a variety of roles. Pam holds an Associate of Science Degree from Lake Superior State University. She takes pride in her work, completing responsibilities in a professional and timely manner while maintaining a mature, gracious, and approachable presence. Meticulous and detail-oriented, Pam is adept at managing priorities and ensuring the smooth functioning of the office.
